Adolescence, marriage, personhood and family. Just a handful of the topics that appear over Key Stage 3. Fertility and fascination are brought into the syllabus as we explore physical and spiritual relationships and what they mean to a person.
This Fertile Heart curriculum goes from Y4 to Y11, comprising of ten lessons every year.
It seeks to give a coherent vision of what it is to be human, empowering the young person to understand themselves more deeply, and therefore make better choices.
In so doing, Key Stage 3 needs to be the place where key foundational understandings are set in place. Just as there is no point in branching out into other subjects if children have not learnt how to read, write and do arithmetic, so it is more important to thoroughly cover the essentials than it is to cover a breadth of less important things. Thus, personhood, dignity, freedom, happiness, tolerance and the importance of being rational and being open to faith are all dealt with thoroughly. Some concepts are introduced that maybe, by themselves, don’t seem central. Can we assure you that they are, as will be more apparent in looking at the whole curriculum.
